Calgary Stampeders News Release
With their first selection in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft, the Calgary Stampeders selected defensive back Eric Fraser (first round, eighth overall) from Central Michigan University. The draft took place on Saturday morning.
"He's a versatile, athletic player who is strong enough to play will (weak-side) linebacker and fast enough to play safety," said head coach/general manager John Hufnagel. "He was a three-year starter at safety for Central Michigan and has contributed on special teams. He's coming off a broken ankle but all the reports are that he's set to resume full training and he'll be completely ready for school in the fall."
Fraser, a Burnaby, B.C. product, made the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team in 2008 and was named Central Michigan's most valuable defensive back. Fraser will turn 22 on May 5 and has one more season of eligibility remaining at Central Michigan.
The Stamps took linebacker Tristan Black of Wayne State with their second-round pick (16th overall) and he will be the highest-drafted pick to attend this season's training camp.
"Tristan is a true football player and a natural middle linebacker," said Hufnagel. "He shows great instincts, plays aggressively and has shown he can play on special teams."
Black, a six-foot-three, 243-pound linebacker, made 101 total tackles in his fourth season for Wayne State to bring his career total to 289. He also sacked four quarterbacks for a grand total of 11 in his Warriors career. He was named to the second-team conference squad for his 2008 efforts.
