Stampeders add more continuity to defence

(Calgary) – Today Calgary Stampeders' Head Coach and VP of Football Operations, Tom Higgins, announced the re-signing of Defensive Back Omar Evans.

As per Club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"I'm very happy to have Omar back with the organization," stated Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Denny Creehan. "We have continuity with our front seven and Omar's signing helps bring continuity in our secondary. He brings experience and knowledge of our system which is extremely helpful in trying to accomplish the things we need to."

"Denny Creehan's return was one of the biggest reasons I wanted to stay in Calgary," stated Omar Evans. "I felt we took some big steps as a defense last season and I'm extremely excited to be working with so many familiar faces on the defensive side of the ball."

2004

Played in 9 regular season games ... finished the season with 19 defensive tackles ... recorded a season high 5 defensive tackles vs Toronto on October 16th .... in the fourth quarter Omar showed his athleticism ... making a diving catch over the middle intercepting a Damon Allen pass which was intended for Tony Miles in the end zone ... Omar also recorded 1 sack, 1 special team tackle, 1 fumble recovery and 1 knockdown during the season.

2003

Played in 15 regular season games...finished the season with 42 defensive tackles, 7 knockdowns, 2 tackles for a loss, 1 fumble recovery and 2 interceptions...May have had his two best games of the year against the Stampeders; June 17, 2003 at McMahon Stadium where he recorded 6 defensive tackles and 1 pass knockdown and back at Molson Stadium July 19, 2003 recording 7 defensive tackles defeating the Stampeders 36-25.

The Alouettes finished the season 13-5 receiving the bye to the Eastern Division Final against the Toronto Argonauts...Omar dressed in that game recording 2 defensive tackles helping the Alouettes fight off the Argonauts to a 30-26 victory...In the 2003 Grey Cup game held at Taylor Field, Omar recorded 2 defensive tackles as the Alouettes fell short to the Eskimos 34-22.

2002

Evans started 12 games with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and made 22 tackles and one interception...A knee injury kept him out of six of the last seven games of the season.

2001

Evans started 18 games with the Roughriders, made 35 tackles and intercepted one pass.

College

Evans was named Howard's top defensive player and was selected first team all-MEAC...In 10 games, he made 25 tackles and led the Bisons with 5 interceptions...He broke up 16 passes...He also returned punts and kicks on special teams.

Personal

Omar lives in Ashburn, Virginia with best friend and off-season workout partner Shawn Springs (Washington Redskins)...Omar played his first CFL game against the Hamilton Ti-Cats on July 6, 2001.
