Argos sign Mihelic for 2005 season
February 15, 2005 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Toronto Argonauts News Release
Mississauga â The Toronto Argonauts Football Club has signed Offensive Guard Mike Mihelic. Mihelic could have entered free agency at midnight tonight but chose to return to the Double Blue. With the signing of Mihelic, all of the members of the 2004 Grey Cup champion offence are under contract with the team.
Offensive Coordinator Kent Austin reacted to having his entire offence under contract. "We felt the most important free agents in the league to sign were our own. There are some talented free agents out there but we believe our own talent pool runs deep. Keeping our entire offence under contract provides the consistency we seek to maintain year in and year out. Anytime there is a change in any position, it creates an environment that is tougher to compete as the CFL training camp is brief. Maintaining this core nucleus of players gives us a leg-up in this veteran-friendly league. This has been our goal when it comes to the Argo offence."
Non-import Mike Mihelic came to the Toronto Argonauts in time for the 2004 season, acquired in a trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for QB Marcus Brady and DB Tawambi Settles. Known for his aggressive play on the field, Mihelic has fully recovered from the injuries that plagued him in the 2004 season.
Remarked Mihelic, "I'm really excited to be back. I'm returning to be a part of an organization that is headed in a positive direction and I'm also returning to be a part of the defending Grey Cup champs. This is the greatest place to play in the CFL and Toronto is quickly becoming the most dominant team in the league."
Toronto Argonauts Head Coach Michael "Pinball" Clemons commented on the signing. "Mike is a great Canadian who learned his trade and still resides in the GTA. This 10 year veteran brings a different dynamic to the core of our offence, the offensive line. He may very well be our strongest, most aggressive and intense offensive lineman. Equally as important, he loves being an Argonaut."
