Idaho Stampede News Release

Bangura newest member of the Stampede team
On January 7, the Idaho Stampede completed a trade with the Michigan Mayhem which brought in 6-5 scoring guard Alpha Bangura in exchange for a 4th round draft pick in the 2006 CBA draft and cash considerations. Today, Bangura was activated off of the Injured Reserve list and was in action at the Stampede's practice.

Bangura is from Freetown, Sierra Leone. Prior to going on the Injured Reserved list for Michigan (on December 21) he was averaging over 30 points per game and was selected to the Eastern Conference All-Star team. Bangura has also played in the NBDL and Portugal.

Bangura began his career at Monmouth (N.J.) averaging 18 points and 5.5 rebounds. He then transferred to St. John's University and played two years, averaging 5.6 points and 2.2 rebounds as a junior before turning pro.

Bangura may be called upon to contribute immediately as Matt Freije has left the team to play in Greece.

Jackson, Stampede set season highs
During the past week, the Stampede and David Jackson both set season highs in various categories. On Friday, January 6 against Michigan the Stampede had their highest scoring of the season with 121 points which was aided by a season high 60 rebounds. On Saturday, Jackson scored 35 against Rockford including six 3-pointers, which is tops for the Stampede this season in both categories.

Stampede documentary in the works
Coming this May, you may be hearing about the Stampede in Hollywood. Baker Shott Productions is producing a documentary on minor league sports featuring the Idaho Stampede and specifically Ricky Sanchez.

The documentary began last year when Sanchez was at the IMG Academy in Florida. Based on the encouragement these independent film makers received from the film industry they are transforming their original 20 minute film into a full length movie. The film is expected to be completed in May and will then be submitted to film festivals around the world.

Freije gone to Greece
Matt Freije is now a member of Olympiakos S.F.P. Pireus, currently in second place in the Greece A1 Division. Freije will only be playing in Euroleague games and will not be playing in the Greek league games. Freije will be playing along side Tyus Edny, a member of the 1995 UCLA team that won the NCAA national championship.

January 17th is rapidly approaching which means that the Athletes.com CBA All-Star Classic is almost here. This is potentially one of the biggest basketball events of 2006 in Boise which includes not only the all-star game but also a dunk contest, 3-point shootout and other community activities.

Sioux Falls Skyforce versus Idaho Stampede @ Qwest Arena

It hasn't been a great start against the Skyforce so far this year as the Stampede have only managed one win in six tries, winning their first match-up in Sioux Falls but dropping the next five. The Stampede will attempt to stop that trend when they play the Skyforce on Wednesday. The Skyforce plays at Yakama on Tuesday night and then will bus here after the game.

The Skyforce have three players on the Western Conference all-star team: Rodney Buford, Stephen Graham, and Brandon Hunter.

Hunter and Renaldo Major have played in all six games and have put up big numbers including 21.2 points and 10.5 rebounds for Hunter and 14.8 point and 6.5 rebounds for Major. Buford and Graham have also been effective against the Stampede. Buford didn't play in the first two games but in the last four has averaged 24.3 points and 7.3 assists. Graham has spent stints in the NBA throughout the season but has played against the Stampede three times averaging 19.7 points and 6.3 assists and scored 37 during their last game against the Stampede.

For the Stampede, David Jackson has been tops in the scoring department averaging 20 per game and set a season high with six made 3-pointers in their last match-up. Eric Chenowith has hit the boards, as he has done all season, averaging 15.2 rebounds against the Skyforce.
