CBA Announces Gary's Jimmie Hunter Player of the Week

Boise, ID (January 9, 2006) - The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Gary Steelheads guard Jimmie Hunter has been named the CBA Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 2 through Jan. 8. Hunter earns the award for the second time this season after averaging 35.0 points in three games last week while scoring 105 points in a matter of a 72-hour span.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound guard tallied a career-high and broke two Gary records with his 50-point performance on Jan. 6 at Albany in a 109-102 victory. Hunter was 14-for-31 from the field and 19-of-21 from the free-throw line in his record-setting game. The previous night, Jan. 5, Hunter scored 39 points at Albany by shooting 11-of-24 from the field and 14-of-17 from the charity stripe. He ended his three-game stretch with 16 points on Jan. 7 vs. Dakota.

For the week, in addition to his 35.0 points per game, Hunter averaged 7.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks to held Gary finish 2-1. He shot 42.1 pct. from the field, 87.5 pct. from the free-throw line, and 37.5 pct. from behind the 3-point arc while committing just six turnovers versus 22 assists, nearly a four-to-one ratio.

Hunter leads the CBA in scoring with 27.5 points per game, while he sits tied for fourth in 3-point field goals made (45), seventh in blocked shots (1.0 pg.), seventh in 3-point accuracy (44.1 pct.), and eighth in assists (5.4 pg.). The Life University product has five of the top-10 scoring performances this season in the CBA, including one game of 50 points, one game of 40 points, and three games of 39 points. His 19 free throws made on Jan. 6 was a CBA season-high and a new Gary record, while his 16 field goals made on Dec. 11 vs. Rockford is tied for tops in the CBA this year. He has eight games of 30-plus points this season.

On Jan. 4, Hunter was named to his third-consecutive CBA All-Star team and will represent Gary on the Eastern Conference All-Star squad. Hunter will be featured on "Hoops TV" this Friday, Jan. 13. "Hoops TV" is carried in over 60 millions homes across the country on regional sports networks such as Comcast SportsNet (Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Southeast, and West), Fox SportsNet (Ohio, New York), the Sun Sports Network, Altitude Sports & Entertainment, Cox Sports Television, the New England Sports Network, and Channel 4 (San Diego, Calif.). The show is also aired on Direct TV (Channel 656) and the Dish Network (Channel 409). Check local listings for the time in your area.

Gary has won four of its last five games and sits in second place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 12-10 record and 3.7 quarter-point average. Gary's next game is Thursday, Jan. 12, when it hosts Michigan at 7 p.m. (CST).
