Idaho Stampede News Release
Boise, ID (January 9, 2006) - The Idaho Stampede have announced that Alpha Bangura has been acquired via trade from the Michigan Mayhem. Bangura averaged 30.1 points per game for the Mayhem before going on the Injured Reserve on December 21. Michigan received a fourth round draft pick in the 2006 CBA draft and cash considerations.
Bangura, a 6-5 shooting guard, began his college career at Monmouth (N.J.) before transferring to St. John's Univeristy. He played two years at St. John's and then turned pro after his junior year.
Professionally, Bangura began his professional career for the Brooklyn Kings in 2002. In January of 2003 he began playing for the North Charleston Lowgators (NBDL) where he completed the 2003 season as well as the 2003-04 season, averaging 15.0 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. During the 2004-05 season, Bangura played in Portugal averaging 19.2 points and finished the 2005 season in Venezuela where he averaged 29.5 points.
Bangura is expected to make an instant contribution after the departure of Matt Freije, who signed a contract to play in Greece. Bangura was officially removed from the Injured Reserve January 9 and is expected to be in the Stampede line-up this Wednesday against the Sioux Falls Skyforce at Qwest Arena. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and tip-off is at 7:10 p.m.
