DES MOINES, IA - The 2011 NBA D-League Champion Iowa Energy were outscored 40-26 in the 4th quarter as they were defeated by the Idaho Stampede 112-102 Saturday night in Des Moines.
The opening half was a defensive battle as the two teams were knotted 42-42 at halftime.
After a back and forth start to the 2nd half, Iowa's Ben Strong scored five straight points mid-way through the 3rd quarter to give the Energy a 66-58 lead. Idaho chipped away at the lead the rest of the quarter, narrowing the lead to 76-72 heading into the final quarter.
The Idaho duo of Antoine Walker and Marcus Banks caught fire early in the 4th quarter, as the two scored the team's first 11 points to bring the visitors to within one at 84-83. After a Seth Tarver free throw tied the game, Walker drilled 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to give Idaho a six point lead with 6:10 remaining in the game. The Stampede run would not end there, as they scored five more points without an Iowa score to take a commanding 95-86 lead with 5:39 left in the game.
Minutes later, as Iowa faced a 99-88 deficit, the Energy rattled off a 10-1 run to cut the Idaho lead to two at 100-98. After forcing an Idaho miss, Iowa's Mike Efevberha had a chance to put the Energy ahead, but his 3-pointer from the corner was off. On the rebound, the Energy's Moses Ehambe was called for a foul, sending Idaho to the free throw line. Idaho wing Tony Bobbitt drilled both free throws, and after another Energy miss, the Stampede made two more free throws to put the game out of reach.
Efevberha led Iowa with 18 points while Nick Murphy added 17 points for the Energy. Point guard Curtis Stinson delivered 15 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds for Iowa, which falls to 19-8 on the season.
Walker led Idaho with 22 points while Banks added 21 on the night. Idaho shot 42 free throws on the night while Iowa shot only 22.
The Energy were whistled for 31 fouls in the game compared to 19 for the visiting Stampede.
Iowa travels to Springfield for games Thursday and Friday. The Armor currently sit in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference, 3 games behind Iowa. The Energy return home on Sunday, February 19th for a 4:00pm game with Ft. Wayne. Tickets are available by calling 564-8550 or visiting www.IowaNBA.com
