Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Sioux Falls, SD-The Sioux Falls Stampede prepared for the future by selecting six players in the 2011 USHL Futures Draft Tuesday. 90 total players with 1995 birthdates were selected. The Herd selected four forwards and two defenseman during the six round draft.

The Stampede can keep these players on their affiliate list for up to three years. An affiliate list is a list of up to 13 players that a team is allowed to protect in addition to their 23-man roster.

With their first pick (9th overall) the Stampede selected forward Dylan McLaughlin of the Buffalo Regals U-16 Tier I Elite team in Buffalo, NY. Stampede Director of Player Personnel Craig Sarner says McLaughlin is a skilled skater with great vision and skill on the ice. He is a left-handed centerman who posted 24 points (11g, 13a) in 35 games this season.

In the second round, Sioux Falls selected defenseman Reed Whiteside. The Trenton, MI native is currently a sophomore at Trenton High School where he skated last season for the Trojans. Sarner says Whiteside (5-foot-11, 160-pounds) is a peerless skater and someone who moves the puck well.

In the third round, the Stampede took forward Michael Sabatini from Honeybaked Hockey in Oak Park, MI. Sabatini helped lead Honeybaked to the Midget Minor national championship this past season. He recorded 26 points (13g, 13a) in 34 games during the regular season. Sarner feels Sabatini is a strong, two-way player who can play center or wing.

With their fourth pick, Sioux Falls selected defenseman Ryan Hutchinson. Hutchinson spent this past season with the Chicago Young Americans U-18 team. Hutchinson is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound right-handed shot. Sarner says he is a stay at home defenseman who plays a very physical game.

In the fifth round, the Stampede chose forward Conner Valesano. The Duluth, MN native is a sophomore at Duluth East High School. He helped lead the Greyhounds to the "AA" state championship game where they eventually fell to Kyle Rau and the Eden Prairie Eagles in triple overtime. Sarner says Valesano has very smart offensive skills and is very quick on the ice. He recorded 25 points (13g, 12a) in 30 games this year.

With their final pick, the Stampede selected forward Bryan Basilico from Rochester, MN. Basilico played this past season with Belle Tire in Detroit, MI where he tallied six points (3g, 3a) and 70 penalty minutes in 29 games. The 6-foot-2 centerman is considered by Sarner to be an all-around solid player who can play both ways.

The Stampede will now turn their attention back to the Clark Cup Playoffs where they will face Omaha in Game 1 of their Western Conference Semi-Final series starting Wednesday night in Omaha. Game 2 will take place Friday in Omaha before the series moves to Sioux Falls this Saturday for Game 3 at the Sioux Falls Arena.
