Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Urbandale, IA - After a rough November the Stampede wanted to make sure they got off on the right foot in December and they did just that with an impressive 5-3 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers Saturday night. The Herd tallied two power play goals and got goals from five different players in the victory as they improved to 9-7-2 on the season. Jaxson Stauber stopped 20 of 23 shots in goal to earn his fifth win of the season.
The Stampede came flying out of the gates and controlled much of the play, but couldn't sneak anything past Des Moines goaltender James Durham early on. The Buds grabbed the first goal at 14:52 of the period when TJ Walsh took the puck in the slot and wristed a shot over the glove of Stampede goaltender Jaxson Stauber. The Herd would respond just 30 seconds later when Jared Westcott broke free down the left wing boards and in on a breakaway where he wristed a shot past the stick side of Durham to tie the game 1-1. Both teams tallied nine shots on goal in the period.
The Stampede took their first lead of the night just 5:29 into the second period when Brandon Tabakin sent a pass through the slot to Anthony Romano who charged in and quickly wristed the puck past Durham for a 2-1 advantage. The Bucs responded at 8:16 when Mac Welsher found the back of the net. The game would not remained tied for long though as the Stampede replied at 9:07 when Ethan Phillips and Max Crozier hooked up to find Andre Lee open in front of the net. Lee took the pass and in front of the goal and picked the upper left-hand corner of the net to give Sioux Falls a 3-2 advantage. The Herd would take that lead into the locker room despite being outshot 10-9 in the period.
It remained a one-goal game until the 10:42 mark of third period when Sioux Falls would go on a power play and convert. Max Crozier took a pass in the high slot and blasted a shot right through traffic and past Durham for a two-goal advantage. That goal would prove to be a big one as the Bucs came back with a goal less than three minutes later to pull back within a goal. The Herd sealed the game with their second power play goal of the night at 16:34 from Austen Swankler. With the Herd on a 4-on-3 advantage, Ryan Johnson sent a pass inside the right circle to Swankler who perfectly one-timed the puck into the upper right-hand corner of the net for a 5-3 advantage.
Sioux Falls outshot the Bucs 14-4 in that final period and 32-23 on the night. The Herd went 2-for-6 on the power play while Des Moines finished the night 1-for-4.
The Herd return to action this Tuesday at the PREMIER Center in a rematch against the Buccaneers. Puck drop is 7:05 PM and tickets are available through the PREMIER Center or Ticketmaster. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used coat to the game for the Stampede coat drive. Fans who donate a coat will receive a voucher good for two tickets to their choice of the December 13, 14 or 27 home game.
