Muskegon Proves Too Much for Madison in First Versus Last Matchup

MADISON, WISC - Sometimes what's on paper doesn't match up with what's on the ice.

In the case of first-place Muskegon playing at last-place Madison Saturday, the results looked an awful lot like what you'd expect.

The Lumberjacks came into the contest as the highest-scoring team in the USHL, while the Capitols were the lowest scoring one.

Nothing changed in that stat line Saturday as Muskegon defeated Madison 7-1 at the Bob Suter Capitol Ice Arena.

The Lumberjacks took the lead just 32 seconds into the game and controlled the host Capitols from start to finish to improve to 17-3 with 34 points. Madison fell to 5-10-1-2 and stayed at 13 points.

The Lumberjacks won their second in a row and second on this three-day, three-game road trip. They'll take on Dubuque at 4:05 p.m. Sunday.

The rout was on early as Danil Gushchin struck for an unassisted goal 32 seconds into the game.

Alex Gaffney made it 2-0 for the guests at 8:48 on another unassisted goal for Muskegon, which outshot Madison 14-9 in the opening period and 39-28 for the game.

The Lumberjacks added a pair of special teams goals to finish off the four-goal period. Colby Bukes connected on the man advantage from Egor Afanasyev at 11:08, and Oliver MacDonald added a short-handed tally three minutes later.

For the second straight game Muskegon chased the opposition's starting goalie. Joseph Lamoreaux stopped only 10 of 14 Lumberjack shots and left in favor of Garrett Mackay, who stopped 22 of 25 shots.

Muskegon goalie Brandon Bussi made 27 saves to improve to a USHL best 17-1. The only goal he allowed came midway through the second period to Alex Mella, who scored his first goal of the season.

Jagger Joshua reestablished the four-goal Muskegon lead on the power play with less than two minutes left in the second period. Mikael Hakkarainen assisted on the play.

Bobby Lynch scored both third-period goals to finish off the rout. His first came on the power play 3:06 into the frame from Hakkarainen. His second of the game, his tenth of the season, came at the 14:22 mark.

The 'Jacks recorded three power play goals in seven chances and added a shorthanded goal. Madison went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
