BOISE, Idaho - The New Mexico Thunderbirds (1-0) defeated the Idaho Stampede at Qwest Arena on Saturday night by the score of 114-93 in the season-opener for both teams.

Thunderbirds forward Alan Anderson scored 34 points, (8-13 FG, 6-9 3FG, 12-13 FT) while Anthony Richardson came off the bench to score 18 points and collect a game-high 15 rebounds. Shane Edwards added 24 points and 10 rebounds for New Mexico, and Dar Tucker scored 18 points off the bench.

"It was a pleasure to see our guys respond to what we've been working on," first-year Thunderbirds Head Coach Darvin Ham said. "Randy (Livingston) and those guys are going to do well; they have the foundation of a great team. We've got a versatile ball club. If we can defend and pass the ball, we'll be good."

Second round draft pick Walter Sharpe led the way for the Stampede (0-1), scoring 20 points, and securing a team-high tying eight rebounds. First round draft pick Salim Stoudamire added 19 points and seven assists. J.T. Tiller totaled five points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

"You've got to play with who you have," Stampede Head Coach Randy Livingston said. "I thought the guys gave me everything they had, but it just wasn't good enough tonight. (New Mexico) played well, I've got to give them all the credit in the world. We've got a lot of work to do and have a long way to go. We make no excuses, it's okay. We'll get the ship righted."

The Thunderbirds used a 15-3 run near the end of the first quarter to take a 30-20 lead after the first quarter, as the Stampede committed seven turnovers. The Stampede shot just 34.1 percent in falling behind 41-59 after the first half.

Idaho would get the Thunderbirds lead down to 11 with 11:31 left in the game, before the Thunderbirds would go on a 14-3 run in the next 5 minutes, 1 second.

The Stampede face the Texas Legends Friday, November 26 and Saturday, November 27 at Qwest Arena. Both games are at 7 p.m.
