Stampede defeat Arsenal in home opener

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Stampede defeated the Anaheim Arsenal 104-94 in the opening game of the season for the Western Division foes. Stampede guard Coby Karl led all scorers in the game, scoring 25 points and dishing out eight assists.
The first quarter featured the only five lead changes in the game. Stampede forward Jason Ellis scored on a lay up with 2:57 remaining in the quarter to put Idaho in front 19-17 and they never fell behind after that point. Brent Petway scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half, to help the Stampede gain a 53-41 advantage going into the halftime break.
Midway through the third quarter the Stampede went on an 11-0 run, helping them establish a 19 point lead going into the final quarter of regulation. Anaheim benefited from strong bench play in the fourth quarter to slowly chip away at the Stampede lead, closing the margin to just three points with 1:41 remaining in the game. Idaho responded by scoring six straight points to lock up their first victory of the season.
The Stampede took advantage of a well balanced team effort, finishing with five players scoring in double figures. Jermareo Davidson finished with a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds. Lance Allred also ended the game with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Jamaal Tatum came off the bench to add 11 points for the Stampede.
"I really like this group of guys and together they are going to find a way to make it happen," said Stampede Head Coach Bryan Gates. "They all worked so hard in training camp and I am proud of what we have done here these last couple weeks and tonight."
Cedric Bozeman and Tierre Brown each finished the game with double-doubles for the Arsenal. Bozeman scored 16 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while Brown scored 12 points and dished out 11 assists in the loss.
Idaho and Anaheim will square off again tomorrow night in Boise. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
