Thunderbirds fall by one in opener

The Albuquerque Thunderbirds (Tbirds) played a hard, physical, high-scoring game against the Colorado  14ers in their season opener.  To start the first quarter the 14ers took the lead 6 to 4.  However, by the  end of the quarter the Tbirds brought the game within 2 points, ending with the 14ers at 33 and the  Tbirds 31. 

The 14ers had some great ball handling in the 2nd  quarter and took their time at their end of the court.   The game remained close throughout the entire 2nd  quarter, each team working hard to take control  whenever possible.  The 14ers were able to come out ahead at the end with a score of 66 to 58. 

First half highlights include Gadson and Monds leading the Tbirds in scoring with 14 and 11 points  respectively.  Monds was also the highest rebounder in the first half with 6.  The 14ers had shared first  half leaders with Mays and Coleman each shooting 15 points.  Dabbert from the 14ers had 8 points and  9 rebounds, while the Tbirds Will Conroy had 5 assists. 

The Tbirds came out fighting in the second half and Will Conroy was giving his teammates some  coaching from the sideline before he joined the game.  Despite their struggle the Tbirds fell 15 points to  the 14ers with about five (5) minutes left in the 3rd , 14ers 84 - Tbirds 69.  During this stretch the Tbirds  had a tough time and missed a lot of shot opportunities when they had the ball at their end and with  multiple attempts.  The 14ers defense was strong and many blocked shots were able to hold off the  Tbirds.  However, even considering the pressure the 14ers were putting on the Tbirds their head coach  was visibly unhappy with the referee's calls.  The 3rd  period came to an end with Albuquerque taking  their time to shoot and getting two, for a 3rd  quarter final of 14ers 95 - Tbirds 84.   

At the beginning of the 4th  quarter the Tbirds worked hard to bring the score back to even.  The Tbirds  tried to slow the game down when in possession, but the 14ers continued to get turnovers.  The tables  turned in the Tbirds favor in the 4th  as the 14ers couldn't get shots of because of the Tbirds good    coverage.  The ball made its way between the goals numerous times without points being scored.  With  5 ½ minutes left in the game Tbirds bring the score with in five (5) points, 14ers 105 - Tbirds 100.  With a  chance to even the score, the Tbirds turn over the ball to the 14ers only to come back with a steal that  Conroy turn into 2 points.  With a little over 4 minutes left the teams are within one point, 14ers 106 -  Tbirds 105.  Then with a Conroy pass to Gadson, the Tbirds tie the game at 107.  The score then flip‐ flopped and was tied multiple times within the last few minutes.  With 25.9 seconds remaining the 14ers  took the lead 117 to 116.   However, in the final 8 seconds the Tbirds are unable to come back and lost  the game to the 14ers 118 to 119.        

The game high scorer for the Tbirds was Will Conroy with 29 pts and for the 14ers it was James Mays  with 27 pts.   Detailed stats can be found on the attached pages. 

The Tbirds also played hosted to the largest home opener in team history with an involved crowd of  4,561.
