Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Two more Binghamton hockey greats will be inducted into the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 8 during a ceremony prior to the Senators' game against the Rochester Americans at 7:05 p.m. For their accomplishments on the ice, the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame committee has selected former Broome Dusters forward Dave Staffen and former Binghamton Rangers forward Ken Gernander as the Class of 2006.

Beginning in the fall of 1994, Ken Gernander spent the next three of his 14 professional seasons with the Binghamton Rangers of the American Hockey League In 1995-96, Gernander posted a professional career best for points (73) and goals (44). Upon retiring, the 36-year-old native of Coleraine, Minn., had served as captain of the New York Rangers AHL affiliate for 10 consecutive seasons (two with the Binghamton Rangers, eight with the Hartford Wolf Pack).

Gernander is the highest scoring American-born AHL player with 624 points (293 goals, 331 assists) and ranks eighth all-time in AHL games played (973). On April 26, 2005, Gernander surpassed Fred Glover for the all-time AHL lead in playoff games played (123). Gernander was a three-time AHL All-Star and captained the 1999 PlanetUSA team. He was also selected as the 1996 and 2004 winner of the AHL's Fred T. Hunt Memorial Award for sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey.

Prior to embarking on a four-year career with the University of Minnesota, Gernander was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the fifth round (96th overall) of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently serving as an assistant coach of the Hartford Wolf Pack after retiring from the club following the 2004-05 season.

Dave Staffen played only one full season in Binghamton, the 1976-77 Broome Dusters campaign. That season, Staffen posted a mind-boggling 87 goals and 40 assists. His 87 goals are easily the most by a Binghamton pro hockey player, 32 more than the second-best total of 55 scored by Rod Bloomfield during the 1974-75 Broome Dusters season. Staffen currently resides in Penetanguishene, Ontario where he owns and operates a restaurant.

The Senators will once again wear special Hall of Fame jerseys on both Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8. The jerseys will be auctioned in section one of the Arena seating area immediately after Saturday's game and proceeds will be donated to the Day Nursery Association. Last season, the auction raised nearly $8,100 for the Day Nursery Association, which provides low-cost day care for children of parents who are working or attending school.

The Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame's mission is to preserve and honor the thirty-three year tradition of professional hockey in Greater Binghamton. The inductions of Staffen and Gernander bring the total number enshrined in the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame to 25. The previous classes are listed below:
