Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals were dealt a tough loss in the opening game of a four-game series in Wichita on Tuesday night. The Wranglers scored the game's final seven runs, beating the Redbirds by a final score of 11-4 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. The Cards remain two games back of the Tulsa Drillers with 12 games to play in the first half, as Arkansas beat Tulsa 8-6 on Tuesday night.
The Cards scored three times in the top of the fifth inning, tying the game at 4-4. The Wranglers refused to let Springfield hang on to the momentum though, as Wichita sent nine men to the plate in each of the next two innings, scoring three in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
The Wranglers took an early 3-0 lead against starter Chris Lambert in the first. The three-run inning was capped by Mitch Maier's two-run homer, his seventh of the year, making it 3-0.
The Cards got one back in the second, as Nick Stavinoha delivered a two-out RBI single, scoring Iker Franco, making it 3-1.
The Wranglers got an unearned run against Lambert in the third, making it 4-1.
The Redbirds rallied to tie the game in the fifth against Wichita starter Junior Herndon, as Reid Gorecki homered with Mike McCoy aboard, making it 4-3. For Gorecki, the homer is his 12th, tying him for the team lead. The Cards got the equalizer moments later, as Juan Richardson scored on Iker Franco's second hit of the game, an infield single that came to rest against the third base bag.
The Wranglers exploded in the bottom of the inning though, getting three runs against Lambert to take the lead for good. Mitch Maier's two-run single capped the inning, making it 7-4.
The Wranglers got four more in the sixth against Springfield reliever Chris Russ, taking a commanding 11-4 lead.
The Cards never threatened against Thad Markray or the rest of the Wichita bullpen. Markray (3-0) earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief.
Lambert (4-5) took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Springfield (32-24) drops their second straight with the loss, but remains just two back of Tulsa in the North Division. The Cardinals will send Stuart Pomeranz (6-2) to the mound on Wednesday night against Kansas City Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (1-0), who's making his second rehab start for Wichita. The Cardinals return home from their 12-day road trip on Saturday, June 10th.
