Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - Starting pitcher Matt Albers tossed seven innings of one-run ball to lead the Hooks to a 5-1 victory over Midland Tuesday night at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi (32-25) remains in first place in the Texas League South by a full game over second place Frisco and by a game and a half over the now third place RockHounds.

Albers (6-2), who was winless in his last four starts, struck out three and didn't give up a walk while scattering seven hits. The one run Albers surrendered came in the sixth inning when Kevin Melillo drove in Brian Stavisky with a two-out double. Albers' only 1-2-3 inning came in his last frame of work.

Josh Anderson sparked the Hooks' offense in the first with a lead-off double. Anderson advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a Hunter Pence sacrifice fly to left field. Josh Bonifay drove his ninth home run of the year over the left field berm in the fourth inning to give the Hooks a 2-0 lead.

The Hooks knocked Hounds' starter Ben Fritz (1-4) out of the game in the sixth inning. Fritz walked two of the first three batters in the frame, and the Hooks had runners at first and second with one out. Two batters later, Walter Young doubled to left-center field, driving in both Pence and Jorge Cortes for a 4-1 Hooks' lead. Fritz worked 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on four hits in the loss.

With the victory, the Hooks have won nine straight games over the RockHounds, the longest streak over one team in franchise history. The streak began on April 18 when the Hooks beat the Hounds in Midland.

Game two of the series is set for Wednesday night with a 7:05 first pitch. RHP Mitch Talbot (1-3, 4.53) will get the nod for the Hooks as LHP Ray Aguilar (5-3, 3.19) takes the mound for the Hounds. The first 2,500 fans through the gates with a paid admission will receive Hooks Duffle Bags compliments of Prosperity Bank. Plus, Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Wednesday.
