Sports prevent sweep, 10-2

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (8-7) were forced to settle for two out of three when the Shreveport Sports (7-9) grabbed a 10-2 win in the final game of the teams series on Saturday night.

The Sports got on the board right out of the gate. Coby Smith led off with a double and moved to third on a bunt by Neb Brown. Todd Self grounded into a fielder's choice to score Smith for the early 1-0 lead.

The Canaries tied the game in the bottom of the first. Ralph Santana singled and advanced to third on a double by Chad Hermansen. Abner Arroyo followed with a groundout to score Santana and even the score, 1-1.

Austin Easly led off the third with a double for the Sports. Easley scored on a single by Melvin Falu, and Falu later scored on a groundout to put the Sports up 3-1.

The Sports put up five more runs in a sixth inning rally. Al Corbeil doubled off the center field wall and scored on a single by Enohel Polanco. Polanco then scored on a single by Tommy Bryant, and Bryant scored off a sacrifice fly by Ned Brown. Todd Self kept it going with an off-the-wall double and scored two more, increasing the Sports lead over the Canaries to 8-1.

The Canaries got one back in the eighth. Santana got on base with a fielder's choice, advanced to third on a double by Hermansen and scored on a groundout by Arroyo to make it 8-2. The Sports would add two runs in the ninth for the 10-2 final.

TJ Hendricks (5-2) picked up the win for the Sports, and Matt Koziara (2-2) suffered the loss for the Canaries.

The Canaries hit the road on Sunday to start a three-game series at St. Joe. The Birds will continue on to St. Paul for another three-game series and arrive back home in Sioux Falls on Sunday, July 30 for a four-game series against Lincoln at the Birdcage.
