Up to Speed

Saturday's outing against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC was another dreary one for Sporting JAX. Just five minutes into the second half, they found themselves in a 3-0 hole. They didn't give in, though, rallying to rattle off two goals in a span of less than five minutes to cut into Pittsburgh's lead. An equalizer never materialized, but it demonstrated the fight that the team possesses.

Coming into this week, the goal is for Sporting JAX to not beat themselves. These self-inflicted errors, largely due to an inherent lack of chemistry, have plagued the team in the earliest moments of its inaugural season. As this roster continues to gel, these mistakes will hopefully minimize.

Last week's match gave fans a first glimpse at newcomer Ryan Edwards, serving as team captain in his first-ever appearance for the club. This experienced addition to the back line will look to pay dividends as Sporting JAX seeks to address one area of concern: goals allowed. Through four matches, the team has allowed 11 goals.

For a completely new squad, it will be nearly impossible to overcome numbers like these so early in the season. Sporting JAX has shown prowess in the attacking end and have dominated possession at times, but they have to steady things defensively to help produce results.

The Opponent

Tampa Bay Rowdies are on fire to start off the 2026 season. After a disappointing 2025, the squad made major changes and-so far-they are paying off in real time.

The Rowdies came out firing, winning each of their first three matches. This hot start includes outscoring their opponents 7-1, having only allowed one goal. This is a far cry from how things have started for Sporting JAX. Things have been great, but Saturday's affair could serve as a bit of a trap game for Tampa Bay. The home side is starving for a positive result and a showdown with their new in-state rival is just the time to make that happen.

The majority of Tampa Bay's offense has come from forward Matt Myers, who has scored two goals. Aside from Myers, it's been a team effort with five other Rowdies getting their name on the board. This leaves Sporting JAX with not just one or two offensive threats to hone in on, but an entire possibility of production to shut down. Across the pitch, it won't be easy to get much past goalkeeper Jahmali Waite, who has looked stellar in net thus far.

The Verdict

A week has passed, but not much has changed. Sporting JAX still needs a result and they need it badly. It won't be easy, but it's time to get a win. Things don't get any lighter following this one, either, as dates with fifth-place Detroit City FC and league-leading Louisville City FC looming on the calendar.

Minimizing self-inflicted wounds and staying calm early will be critical for a Sporting JAX team that has struggled. Being an expansion team is never an easy task, but a positive result against the Rowdies could be what turns things around for Coach Fox and company.
