Spokane Stops Surging Silvertips in Shootout

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs went 2-for-5 on the power play and withstood a late surge from the division-leading Everett Silvertips to earn a 4-3 shootout win on Wednesday night at Spokane Arena. The win was Spokane's first in a shootout at home since January 31, 2015.

The Silvertips wasted no time taking advantage of their first power play chance of the game as Connor Dewar made it 1-0 just 3:50 into regulation.

Spokane countered with a goal of their own on a 5-on-3 man advantage as Luc Smith rifled in his 13th of the season and fifth in eight games since being acquired by the Chiefs in a trade.

Everett regained the lead early in the second period as Max Patterson tipped in a bouncing puck - again on the power play - to make it 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

San Jose Sharks prospect Jake McGrew slipped a crafty backhand pass to Luke Toporowski for a rebound goal three minutes later to make it 2-2. The Chiefs earned their first lead of the night just 56 seconds later as forward Adam Beckman strengthened his hold on the WHL rookie goal-scoring leaderboard with his 14th of the year on a deflection.

Bryce Kindopp picked up his third goal in two games against the Chiefs, scoring again on a power play at 14:02 of the middle frame to tie the game at 3-3. The back-and-forth game slowed down in the third period as both teams were held off the scoresheet in the final 20 minutes as well as the five-minute overtime.

Spokane netminder Bailey Brkin was perfect while Nolan Reid and McGrew each hit the twine in the shootout, beating Everett goaltender Dustin Wolf to secure the two points. Spokane last won in a shootout at Spokane Arena back on Jan. 31, 2015 as then-captain Jason Fram scored the game-winner in the fourth round of a 4-3 victory over Medicine Hat.

The Chiefs finished the night 2-for-5 on the power play and 1-for-4 on the penalty kill. Everett outshot the Chiefs 46-35.

The Chiefs are on the road for a quick one-game road trip to Seattle on Friday before returning home to close out the first half of the season on Sunday, December 16 against the same Seattle Thunderbirds.
