Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA - The Spokane Indians kept things loose before their series opener against the Hops with an afternoon Fungo Golf tournament. It might just become a daily ritual. The Indians broke out of their long slump in impressive fashion thanks to a relentless offensive assault as the team piled up 12 hits on their way to a 12-1 win over Hillsboro in front of 4,173 fans at Avista Stadium for Fan Appreciation Night presented by Alorica, KXLY 920, and Prime.
The Hops struck first with a run in the third against Demarcus Evans but the Indians responded quickly with a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Seth Spivey ground out and an RBI single from Luis Terrero. Spokane added two more in the fourth before blowing things wide open with an eight-run fifth inning that featured five hits, three walks, two wild pitches, and the ejection of Hillsboro's Josh Anderson who was tossed after arguing a close call at third base.
Charles Leblanc delivered the dagger in the fifth with an opposite-field triple that plated two and chased struggling reliever Dallas Newton - who allowed seven earned runs in just 0.2 innings - from the game. Terrero then greeted Hillsboro's new pitcher with an RBI double to cap off the night's scoring.
The 12 runs were more than enough for a Spokane pitching staff that allowed just six hits to the Hops. Evans went four solid innings, Scott Sebald (1-0) picked up his first professional win with three scoreless frames, and Garrett Brummett closed out the game with four strikeouts over the eighth and ninth innings.
Leblanc and Terrero both finished 3-for-5 with three RBI while Chad Smith and Curtis Terry each drove in a pair of runs in the win. The victory lifted Spokane's record to 10-21 in the second half and 29-40 overall.
