VANCOUVER, Canada-The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes travelled into Canada to take on the Vancouver Canadians Monday night, and they did not forget to bring their bats along for the trip. The Volcano offense erupted for 13 runs, which was complimented by stellar pitching that kept the Canadians off balance all night.

When the dust settled, the Volcanoes came away with a 13-4 victory.

Despite the blowout, it was a promising start for Vancouver. Outfielder DJ McKnight led off the bottom of the first with a triple off Salem-Keizer starter Garret Williams, and was pushed home one batter later for a quick 1-0 Canadian lead.

That would be all the Canadians would get against Williams, as he would spend the next five innings dominating the Vancouver bats, scattering three hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Shortstop Ryan Howard helped get the run back in the top of the second, leading off with a single. He scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Catcher Zack Bowers.

Salem-Keizer took the lead for good in the third. Third baseman Manuel Geraldo singled home centerfielder Woody Edwards, and right fielder Heath Quinn followed with a towering home run to left field for a 3-1 lead.

The blast was Quinn's ninth of the year, which is second best in the Northwest League to fellow Volcano outfielder Gio Brusa.

Geraldo broke the game open in the sixth with a one-out, bases loaded triple to right field. He would score three pitches later on a wild pitch that got away from Vancouver pitcher Gabe Noyalis. Geraldo finished the game with two hits, scoring two runs and knocking in four.

The fireworks continued in the eighth, when left fielder Julio Pena hit his second home run of the year, a two-run shot to left field. Bowers, who lead off the inning with a double, also scored on the play.

Salem-Keizer added even more insurance in the ninth. Second baseman Kevin Rivera tripled home Brusa with two outs, and Bowers followed with the third Volcano round-tripper of the night, his first of the year.

Three Vancouver hits and a Salem-Keizer error allowed the Canadians to get three runs back in the bottom of the eighth, but it was too little too late for the Canadians.

Willams earned the win for the Volcanoes. The loss went to the Vancouver starter Dalton Rodriguez, who allowed five earned runs in 5.2 innings.

The Volcanoes will be back in action tomorrow for game two of the five game set in Vancouver. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
