Brampton Steelheads News Release
Hamilton, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads ended the year of 2019 by taking on the Hamilton Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon.
The Steelheads (13-20-2-1) headed into the game trailing the Bulldogs (15-8-2-0) by three points for fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Hamilton was without forwards Arthur Kaliyev and Jan Jenik, who are away from the team at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic, while the Steelheads were without Keean Washkurak, who remained out of the lineup with an injury.
Hamilton nearly opened the scoring early in the first, as a giveaway by the Steelheads defence led to a breakaway for Ryan Winterton, missing the net high. Mississauga received a fortunate bounce, as Charlie Callaghan dumped the puck into the corner that re-directed to Cole Schwindt in front of the net, who was able to beat Zachary Roy to put the Steelheads up by one. With Hamilton in the penalty box for too many men, Ty Collins found James Hardie down low, beating Roy on the far post to increase the Steelheads lead to two.
Mississauga went to a 5-on-3 powerplay, as Hamilton headed to the penalty box for cross checking and a subsequent roughing penalty. Thomas Harley took full advantage, wiring a wrist shot on a pass from Aidan Prueter to put the Fish up by three. The Steelheads headed into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead, with Harley registering two points (1G, 1A) in the period.
Cole Schwindt offered his thoughts on the Steelheads first period "We came out really strong, coming off a game we didn't really like two days ago. I think that was huge for us, one of the things that we needed to work on was getting a good foot forward, and we did that. We'll take that into the room and come back for the second period."
The second period proved to be more tightly contested, as neither team was able to generate much in the offensive zone early on. The Steelheads best opportunity came with five minutes remaining in the period, as Hamilton was called for a slashing penalty. Mississauga was buzzing following the powerplay, as Schwindt made a dangerous cross-slot pass to Ham but he lifted the shot just high. Hardie made a nice behind the back, no look pass to Schwindt on the ensuing rush, who made no mistake beating Roy five-hole to put the Steelheads up by four. Kai Edmonds made an incredible pad save on a 2-on-1 to preserve the Fish lead, as they headed into the third period with a 4-0 advantage. Mississauga outshot Hamilton 16-10 in the period, with Edmonds stopping 10/10 shots on goal.
Michael Renwick got the Bulldogs on the board early in the third, as he picked up the rebound on his own wrap around attempt and beat Edmonds over the shoulder. Hamilton would have another opportunity to cut into the Steelheads lead, as they headed to the powerplay on the heels of a high-sticking penalty. Nic Canade would negate the penalty as he drew a slash from a Hamilton player, before breaking down the ice and nearly scoring on a 2-on-1 opportunity with Schwindt.
Liam Van Loon rang the post on an odd-man rush for the Bulldogs, before Calvin Martin and Ty Collins went on a 2-on-1 the other way, with Collins just missing the net on an opportunity all alone in front. Hamilton went to the powerplay on a Steelheads slashing penalty, with eight minutes to go in the third. Mississauga successfully killed the penalty, before a Cameron Supryka wrist shot from the point would deflect off a player in front, making the scoring 4-2. Cole Schwindt would add an empty netter for the hat trick, as the Steelheads ended the year with a victory, defeating Hamilton by a score of 5-2.
Florida Panthers prospect Cole Schwindt added three goals, as he continues to be one of the hottest players in the OHL registering 23 points (12G, 11A) in his last 14 games. Nic Canade extended his point streak to five games with an assist, while James Hardie (1G, 1A) and Thomas Harley (1G, 1A) also recorded multi-point games in the victory. With the victory, the Steelheads moved into a three-way tie for 6th place in the Eastern Conference with the Niagara IceDogs and Barrie Colts.
The Steelheads next game will come on Friday, January 3rd, at the Budweiser Gardens against the London Knights. Mississauga will return home on Sunday, January 5th as they take on Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Semyon-Der Arguchintsev and the Peterborough Petes. Tickets to the game can be purchased by visiting the Box Office, online through ticketmaster.ca or by calling 905-502-9100.
