Spitfires Fly Past Firebirds 5-2

The Flint Firebirds came to town for the 2nd game of the home and home series between the Spitfires and the Firebirds. The Spitfires were looking to go 3-0 against Flint this season.

The Spitfires got off to a hot start in the first period. Just seven minutes into the period, Purboo buried an Afansyev rebound giving the Spitfires a 1-0 lead. Only 4 minutes later, it was Angle dropping the puck to Cuylle who wired one past the netminder making it 2-0. And the Spits weren't done there! Five minutes after going up by two goals, the Spitfires buried a third. Johnston gave a beautiful feed to Douglas who got his 13th of the season. The Spitfires led 3-0 after 20 minutes. Windsor also led in shots 13-7.

In the second frame, the Firebirds scored on a turnover just five minutes into the period cutting the Spitfire lead to two. However, the Spitfires responded only six minutes later. Afanasyev was streaking to the net, and the puck hit off his skate into the net restoring the Spits' three-goal lead. The Spitfires led 4-1 after two periods and in shots 27-20.

In the third period, the Firebirds scored just two minutes into the period, making it a 4-2 game. The Firebirds had a couple of powerplays but failed to capitalize. Tyler Angle added an empty-net goal making it 5-2. The Spitfires went on to win 5-2 and go 3-0 against the Flint Firebirds so far this season.

The Spitfires' next game is January 3rd, 2020, as the Spitfires' travel to the Soo. Puck drops at 7:07 pm.
