Spits Drop Sixth Straight With 5-2 Loss To Whalers

Connor Carrick's goal late in the second period stood up as the winner in a 5-2 Plymouth Whalers victory over the Spitfires in New Year's Eve matinee action Monday.

Garret Meurs scored a pair of goals for Plymouth (16-12-5-3), which moved within three points of Sarnia for first in the West Division.

Kerby Rychel (23) and Zach Lorentz (6) countered for Windsor (14-18-1-5), which dropped its sixth straight game.

For the third straight game, the Spitfires opened the scoring; this time on a Rychel powerplay marker at 6:45 of the first period.

But Garrett Meurs answered with just 39 seconds to play in the period, evening the game at 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Carrick's winner epitomized the afternoon: as he lugged a puck deep into the Windsor zone from his blueline position before aggressively shedding a Spitfires defender and roofing one past Jaroslav Pavelka (26 saves) at 15:55 of the second.

Meurs second of the game, a circus-like sprawling effort on a partial breakaway, was the dagger, making it a 4-1 game at 13:31 of the third period.

Lorentz's first goal as a Spitfire quickly cut the lead to 4-2. But the Spits could get no closer.

Tom Wilson rounded out the scoring, sliding one into an empty net from inside the Plymouth zone with 1:11 to play.

Surprise starter Alex Nedeljkovic was outstanding in goal for the Whalers, making 38 saves.
