IceDogs Close out 2012 in Style with 7-4 Win over Otters

The Niagara IceDogs closed out 2012 in style with a big 7-4 come from behind win over the visiting Erie Otters in front of another sellout crowd of 3,145 at the Gatorade Garden City Complex!

The first period saw the IceDogs fall behind early as Erie opened the scoring on the powerplay 2:13 in to make it 1-0. Steven Shipley would even things up minutes later with a powerplay goal of his own to make it a 1-1 game. Erie would then score twice more in the period to make it a 3-1 Erie lead after one. Shots after one were 14-7 IceDogs.

Despite the tough start, the IceDogs would not let up, as they came battling back in the second with Mack Lemmon putting one home to cut the IceDogs deficit to 3-2. Steven Shipley would keep things rolling for the IceDogs less than a minute later, picking up his second goal of the night to knot things up at 3-3. Shipley would not stop there either as he would complete the hat trick with his second powerplay goal of the night to give the IceDogs their first lead of the night at 4-3. Erie would answer back before the end of the period with a goal of their own however, sending the teams into the intermission tied at 4-4. Shots after 40 minutes continued to favour the IceDogs 24-17.

The third period would see the IceDogs carry over their momentum from the second, as Mitchell Theoret would continue his strong play, scoring 6:13 in to give the IceDogs the lead again at 5-4. Carter Verhaeghe would keep things going for the IceDogs, scoring just prior to the midway point of the third to give the IceDogs an important insurance goal, making it 6-4. Shayne Rover would then seal things for the IceDogs, putting home his own rebound on a breakway to make it 7-4. That would prove to be it for scoring as the IceDogs took home the 7-4 win.

Bo Bessette picked up his first career OHL victory in relief of Chris Festarini, stopping 19 of 20 shots for the win.

The IceDogs will have the next few days off to rest up before hosting the Barrie Colts on Thursday night, and the Sarnia Sting, Sunday afternoon at the Gatorade Garden City Complex. Tickets for these and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
