Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON - The Spitfires had a lengthy rest in order to reset and turn around a 5 game losing streak. On Saturday, they did just that, taking down the Memorial Cup host Saginaw by a score of 5-2.
In the first period, it was all Spitfires, they were dominant on the puck and were rewarded. Just over 8 minutes into the game, a sweet passing play went from Dionicio to Greentree who shot the puck and was stopped but Peer followed up on the rebound and scored his 3rd of the season to give the Spitfires a 1-0 lead. Just six minutes later, the same trio struck again. This time it was Peer passing to Dionicio who fooled everyone and slid the puck backdoor to Greentree for a wide open net. The Spitfires led 2-0 on the scoreboard and had a 10-8 shot advantage after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Spitfires continued to pile on the offence. A pass from Castle to Smith led him on a partial breakaway and he scored his 4th to make it 3-0 Spitfires. The Spitfires would get into a little bit of penalty trouble and the Spirit were able to capitalize once. To make it a 3-1 game with 14 minutes to play in the 2nd. 10 minutes later the Spirit would strike again and make it a 3-2 game.
In the third period, both teams would battle hard to find an all important next goal. It came down to the wire as the Spirit pulled their netminder late in the game and the Spitfires cashed in on the empty net. Greentree scored his 2nd of the night to make it 4-2. Less than a minute later, Maillet scored another empty net goal and the Spitfires took the win 5-2.
The Spitfires have a few more days of rest and practice before a 3 in 3 next week. Thursday the 67s are in town for a 7:05pm puck drop on first responders night. On Friday, the Spitfires travel to Sarnia for a 7:05pm puck drop and then back at home on Saturday vs Niagara for our Halloween night, also at 7:05pm.
