January 6, 2024 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Spitfires were looking for a sixth consecutive game with at least a point as they headed south to the Erie Insurance Arena for a matchup with the Otters. It was a tightly contested affair that needed a shootout to be solved.
In the first period, the Spitfires dictated the play for the first four minutes as they had numerous chances but could not bury it. With just five minutes expired, the Otters would strike first on a rebound to take a 1-0 lead. Just over six minutes later, the Spitfires were able to respond. Maillet got the puck up to Greentree and he skated in over the blue line and was hooked up but got the puck to Abraham in the slot and he scored his 13th goal of the season. The Spitfires were sent to the PK a few minutes later and were successful on the kill. In the final minute, Eichler would give the Spitfires the lead with a slapshot from the point to give the Spitfires a 2-1 lead after the period. The Otters had 13 shots while the Spitfires had 12 through twenty minutes.
In the second period, the Otters would strike back just under four minutes into the frame and we were tied at 2. The tie game lasted just 16 seconds as Outwater would tap in a rebound to give the Spitfires a 3-2 lead. Just under nine minutes later, the Otters would tie it at 3 on a scramble in the Spitfires crease. After 40 minutes we were tied, at 3 on the scoreboard and 21 on the shot clock.
In the third period, both teams were looking for the all important next goal. The Spitfires had to kill off a cross-checking minor to Eichler which they did successfully. Both teams would fail to find the go ahead goal in regulation and we were off to overtime.
In the overtime period, both teams would trade chances. Greentree made a nice move but sailed the puck over the net on a backhand. The Otters would come back and Michelone would make a great save and cover up. The overtime frame solved nothing and we were headed to a shootout.
In the shootout, Greentree and Davis would score but followed up by Molnar and Spence for Erie. The third shooter Maillet was stopped by Gaudreau. Edwards would score and the Otters would take the win in a shootout and the second point.
The Spitfires will now travel to Niagara for an afternoon tilt on Sunday with puck drop scheduled for 2:00pm.
