Flint Firebirds News Release
FLINT, Mich. - Tristan Bertucci scored a power-play goal and Nathan Aspinall netted his third goal in the last three games but the visiting Oshawa Generals scored early and often and cruised to a 10-2 win over the Flint Firebirds on Saturday night at the Dort Financial Center. Connor Lockhart led the way with a hat trick for Oshawa.
The Generals scored twice in the opening period, striking in both the first minute and the final minute. First, Colorado Avalanche prospect Calum Ritchie intercepted a pass behind Flint goaltender Jacob Brown and sent a pass into the slot. The puck deflected off a defender's skate and went to Lockhart for a shot that he snapped home low on the glove side of Brown. Their second came with seven seconds remaining in the first as Stuart Rolofs gained the zone with an odd man rush. He found a trailing Luca D'Amato and the former Firebird fired a shot over Brown's right shoulder to make it 2-0.
Oshawa scored three more quickly in period two. Rolofs fired a shot that deflected off Brown's glove and skipped into the net to extend the lead to three. Less than 30 seconds later, Matthew Buckley grabbed a rebound that popped away from traffic in front of the net and flicked it high under the crossbar. Then, Ethan Tomas carried the puck in, deked and roofed a shot past Brown to make it 5-0.
Bertucci finally put the Birds on the scoreboard moments shy of the game's midway point. With Flint on a power play, Kaden Pitre passed up the left-wing wall to Bertucci at the point. The Dallas Stars prospect walked the line toward the high slot and launched a snapper that went low glove past Jacob Oster and the Firebirds cut the deficit to four.
The Gens would score twice more before the second intermission. Rolofs connected for his second by burying a shot off his own rebound. Then, Lockhart was sprung for a breakaway that led to a snap shot that got through Nathan Day, extending the lead to 7-1.
Aspinall doubled Flint's score early in period three off a drop pass from Kaden Pitre at the top of the left circle. He unleashed a deceptive snapshot that beat Oster low on the blocker side to bring the score to 7-2.
The Gens would add three more late markers inside the final five minutes of the game. Dylan Roobroeck, Toms and Lockart each tallied late goals. Lockhart capped the Oshawa wave with his third of the game, giving him a hat trick and the Generals a 10-2 win.
Brown made nine saves on 14 shots before Day came in and stopped 18 of 23. With the loss, the Firebirds fell to 15-20-2-1 while Oshawa improved to 16-15-3-1.
The Birds will take the ice next on Wednesday night at home against the Owen Sound Attack. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dort Financial Center.
