December 17, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Spitfires headed up to Owen Sound on Saturday night and took home a solid 2 points ahead of the Christmas Break.
In the first period, the Spitfires got off to a great start. Maggio drew a penalty and the powerplay went to work. The Attack had a shorthanded opportunity that missed the net and Maillet got the loose puck at the Spitfires blue line and skated up the ice creating a 2 on 1 with Greentree. Maillet shot it off the far pad and the rebound went to the stick of Greentree who scored his 9th of his rookie season. Just a few minutes later, the Attack would score on a 4 on 4 chance to tie the game at 1. The rest of the period was the Joey Costanzo show, he made several highlight reel saves to keep the game tied. The Spitfires led in shots 16-14 after the period.
In the second period, the Attack would storm the Spitfires and score twice 6 minutes apart to take a 3-1 lead. After a Spitfire layover, they responded with 3 goals in a span of 1:18 to take a 4-3 lead. Christopoulos started the scoring with his 22nd on a nifty backhanded breakaway. Just 49 seconds later, Colton Smith scored his 11th of the season and pointed to the sky for his former teammate Abakar Kazbekov who passed away earlier in the day. And 29 seconds after that, Jodoin scored his first of the season to give the Spitfires a 4-3 lead.
In the third period, the Spitfires Captain would extend the Spits lead to 5-3 with a snipe. Maillet and Greentree had assists on the goal. The Attack would respond with a goal of their own and make it a 5-4 game with 12:20 to play in the period. The Spitfires would hold on for the win and 2 points ahead of the Christmas holidays.
The Spitfires now have a break until December 28th when they return home to face the Guelph Storm. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
