Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON - The Spitfires were looking to continue the momentum into Thursday's contest. Last time out they defeated the Sudbury Wolves who were the #1 team in the East with a big 11-7 victory. Multi point games from Abraham, Spellacy and Zito powered the big win. The Spitfires were in for another tough contest as the Soo Greyhounds were in town. The Soo sit second in the Western Conference with 55 points and loaded up to go for a championship picking up Jack Beck, Gavin Hayes and Jacob Frasca. On Thursday the Soo had a great second period and the Spitfires did not which was the difference in the 6-2 loss.
In the first period, the Spitfires were able to get on the board first just over five minutes in. Greentree found Abraham streaking to the net and he went five-hole to extend his point streak to 12 games. Ten minutes went by and the Spitfires powerplay could not get anything going and ultimately gave up a shorthanded goal to tie the game at one. Less than three minutes later, the same duo of twelve and sixty-six went to work and Greentree would score his 24th on the year to give the Spitfires a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. Shots were 14-10 for the Soo after one frame.
In the second period, the Soo came out with a vengeance scoring two goals in the first minute to take a 3-2 lead. Less than four minutes later, the Soo would score a third straight and go up 4-2. With exactly 5 minutes left in the period, the Soo would score a fourth unanswered and take a commanding 5-2 lead heading into the third.
In the third period, it was a parade to the penalty box for both teams. Both teams struggled to get going offensively in the period because of the penalties. Late in the game with just over two minutes to play the Soo would score a 5th unanswered to go up 6-2 and that would do it.
The Spitfires hit the road tomorrow to go to Brantford for a Saturday puck drop at 4:00pm.
