Saginaw Spirit News Release
Ottawa, Ont. - The Saginaw Spirit (27-12-0-1) traveled to TD Place Arena to take on the Ottawa 67's (20-17-3-0) on Friday, January 19th. Josh Bloom scored his first goal of the year since returning to the OHL earlier this month. Andrew Oke stopped 24 of 26 shots for the Spirit while Collin Mackenzie stopped 35 of 39 shots for the 67's as the Spirit skated to a 4-2 victory.
Collin MacKenzie was pelted by Saginaw in the start of the first period but it eventually paid off with 6:16 left in the first. After Josh Bloom won a faceoff in Ottawa's zone, Bloom immediately passed behind him to Zayne Parekh. His shot was deflected on its way to the net by Michael Misa for his 20th of the season and the 1-0 lead.
With four minutes left in the first period, Ottawa's Frankie Marrelli was called for tripping to send the Spirit to their first powerplay. However, it was the 67's who would find the back of the net as Matthew Mayich jammed a puck past Andrew Oke's pad to even the score.
Just over a minute later, Samuel Mayer added a powerplay goal with Zayne Parekh in the box for holding.
The first period ended with Ottawa leading Saginaw, 2-1 but the Spirit outshot the 67's, 16-12.
Just 2:30 into the second period, the Spirit managed to tie the game. After collecting a pass from Will Bishop, Calem Mangone took a shot from the right faceoff dot. Lincoln Moore was there for the rebound and simply flipped the puck behind Mackenzie to even the score, 2-2.
Captain Braden Haché and Luca Pinelli got into a tussle with 15 minutes left in second and both were sent to the penalty box for roughing. The Saginaw Spirit took advantage of the 4v4 as Owen Beck passed to Josh Bloom who was battling in front of the net. Bloom's turnaround backhander made its way over the glove of MacKenzie for the 3-2 lead.
With 2:34 left in the second, Saginaw extended their lead to 4-2. Rodwin Dionicio passed to Michael Misa who then found Zayne Parekh. Parekh took a long shot along the right-wing boards, sending the puck just past Collin MacKenzie's stick, into the net.
The second period ended with Saginaw leading Ottawa, 4-2, and continuing to outshoot the 67's, 30-17 (14-5 in the second period).
A scoreless third period saw Andrew Oke make nine saves, guiding the Spirit to the 4-2 victory - their first in Ottawa since October of 2016.
Saginaw will remain on the road as they take on the Peterborough Petes on Saturday, January 20th, at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. Puck drop is at 7:05pm.
