Erie Otters News Release
Sudbury, Ontario - The northern road trip continued for the Erie Otters on Friday evening as the team played its final matchup of the season against the Sudbury Wolves. Downing Sudbury on home ice in overtime back in November, Erie would hope to replicate that success in front of a sold-out crowd in northern Ontario. The Otters would look to build off a strong third period the night before in North Bay that saw the team strike for two power play goals in the closing 10 minutes, but come up just short in a 4-3 loss.
After a great finish to the Thursday night contest, Erie would open Friday in similar fashion. With a loose puck below the goal line early on in the game, Bruce McDonald (8) would wrap it around past the out-of-position Sudbury netminder to put the Otters up 1-0. Erie wouldn't be done there, as a preferable opportunity for Alexis Daviault would turn into a one-time pass of sorts for Carey Terrance (24) to put away for the Otters' second goal. After 20 minutes of play, Erie would show they meant business with a 2-0 lead and an 8-5 shot advantage.
Continuing the trend of first period success, Erie would absolutely dominate the second period over the Sudbury Wolves - striking three more times to jump out to five goals. Just 3:50 into the frame, Ondrej Molnar (13, PPG) would continue Erie's early period goal-scoring to put Erie up 3-0. Just over three minutes later, Brett Bressette (11) would put Erie up 4-0, and start to put a proverbial nail in the coffin of the game in favor of Erie. A more definitive nail would be put in as Martin Misiak (15) would put Erie up 5-0 before the game's halfway mark. The period would end with a hint of life for the Wolves, as Dalibor Dvorsky (21) would make it a 5-1 game through 40. Erie would lead 5-1, but trail in shots 18-17.
Why not keep things consistent? Erie would open scoring for the third straight period, as Kaleb Smith (5) would put one away with just :61 gone by in the period. The Wolves would strike for the next two goals in the game, firstly from David Goyette (26) 5:51 into the third, and with the net empty on their side, a six-on-five goal from Evan Konyen (18) to make it a 6-3 game. Erie would close things out for good as Brett Bressette (12) would hit the empty net, and Erie would control the game bookend to bookend enroute to a huge 7-3 victory over the top team in the Eastern Conference. With the win, Erie would sweep the season series with the Wolves for the first time since 2019.
The Northern Swing for the Erie Otters closes out on Sunday afternoon as they play the final game against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Erie downed the Greyhounds on American Thanksgiving in a thrilling contest, with the Otters defeating the Greyhounds in three-straight contests dating back to 2021.
