THIS WEEK IN SPIRIT HOCKEY:

On Valentine's Day, the Saginaw Spirit (26-19-8-0) hosted the Soo Greyhounds (45-6-2-2) for a West Division matchup at The Dow Event Center. Saginaw opened up a 2-1 lead after the first period and a 3-1 lead after two frames. In the third stanza, the Greyhounds rebounded with four goals, three of which were unanswered. D.J. Busdeker scored with less than four minutes remaining to force overtime. In the extra period, Spirit netminder Evan Cormier stood tall and denied several quality chances from the Soo, necessitating a shootout to decide the winner. Cormier was perfect in the shootout (2-for-2) as Cole Coskey and Blade Jenkins scored, securing a 6-5 victory over the CHL's top-ranked team.

On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit (26-20-8-0) hosted the Sarnia Sting (39-12-4-0) for a West Division matchup at The Dow Event Center. Throughout the contest, Sarnia put forth a balanced offensive attack and spread their three goals across three frames, recording one in each of the three periods. Sting center Jonathan Ang tallied Sarnia's first period goal and defenseman Mitch Eliot logged the Sting's second goal of the night, while Jordan Kyrou dumped the puck into the Spirit's empty net to finalize a 3-0 score. Despite being shutout, Saginaw fired 42 shots on goal during the game.

On Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit (27-20-8-0) headed to Flint to play the Flint Firebirds (16-34-3-2) for the eighth and final time in the regular season. The Spirit opened the game with a goal in the first 28 seconds from Blade Jenkins. Flint came back to tie the game 1-1 in the second period. The third period saw a total of six goals and ended in a 5-3 victory for the Spirit. The Spirit now have earned a point in their last nine consecutive games against the Firebirds. The Spirit end the Coors Light I-75 Divide series 7-0-1.

On Monday afternoon, the Saginaw Spirit (27-21-8-0) traveled to Sarnia to play the Sarnia Sting (40-13-4-0) for the sixth and final time in the regular season. Spirit goaltender Cameron Lamour got the start on Monday making his 15th appearance of the season. Lamour has had two wins in his previous two apperances against Sarnia during the 2017-18 regular season.

Sarnia took the lead in the first period with three goals followed by a goaltender change for Saginaw. Two goals were added to the score count in the second period making the tally 5-0. A goal in the third for Sarnia took them to a 6-0 lead. In the last minute of play, 2018 NHL Draft prospect Max Grondin scored denying the shutout and ending the game in a 6-1 decision.

NEXTEER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Nexteer Automotive presents "Player of the Week": Saginaw Spirit forward, #19 Blade Jenkins

The 17 year old forward has recorded 37 points, 17 goals and 20 assists, so far into his first year in the Ontario Hockey League. With 37 points, Blade is currently ranked 4th in points out of first year players in the OHL.

This past weekend, the Michigan Native recorded 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 games played. As well as the winning goal in a 6-5 shootout victory over the #1 CHL Ranked Soo Greyhounds.

Saginaw Spirit, forward #7 Kyle Bollers grew up in Oshawa, Ontario and has played hockey for 14 years. The Saginaw Spirit signed the 5'11 forward as a Free Agent in September 2016 after playing a season with the Traverse City Hounds. The 2nd year forward has recorded 8 goals and 11 assists so far this season. If Kyle had to eat one food for the rest of his life, he would go with Honey Garlic Chicken Wings.
