Spirit take fourth straight, 7-1 over Quebec

July 27, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

A five-run fifth inning from the Spirit offense and a solid outing from starter Chris Farley sent North Shore to its fourth straight win at home with a 7-1 shellacking of the Quebec Capitales in the series opener on Thursday night at Fraser Field.

Things didn't start out too promising for the Spirit cause. Quebec was quick out of the gate in this contest, getting to Chris Farley for a first-inning score. Willie James led off the game with a walk and came around to score on a double of the bat of Dany Scalabrini.

The Spirit responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning, however, to erase the Quebec advantage. With two outs, Vic Davilla reached on a single and Andrew Wishy followed with a towering home run over the left field wall. The two-run shot was Wishy's fourth home run of the season, and it put the Spirit ahead 2-1 after one inning of play.

The Spirit padded their lead in the bottom of the fifth, sending nine men to the plate and putting five more runs onto the board. Garrett Weir doubled and B.J. Weed reached when Quebec reliever Shawn Ryan muffed the exchange on his sacrifice bunt to get things started. Davilla scored both with a two-run double and Jeff Brooks sent Davilla home with a single to right. With three runs already across the plate in the inning, Alex Trezza belted a two-run homer to right to close out the scoring in the game. Trezza's 10th long ball of the season tied him with teammate Vic Davilla for the league lead.

After a shaky start, Farley settled down and kept the Quebec offense in check during his seven innings of work. He allowed just the one run on six hits for his sixth win of the season. Matthew Bishop pitched two strong innings of relief in his Spirit debut, holding the Capitales scoreless in two innings of work. Capitales starter Kevin Beavers suffered his first loss of the season, dropping his record to 1-1.

The Spirit and the Capitales resume their four-game set tomorrow night at Fraser Field. Jared Trout will get the start for the Spirit while the Capitales send Keith Dunn to the mound. Game time for Jimmy Buffet night at Fraser Field is set for 7:05 p.m.
