North Shore Spirit News Release

Things got off to a ceremonial start on Wednesday night at the new Fraser Field for Game 1 of the best-of-five series between the Quebec Capitales and the North Shore Spirit. The playoff pageantry faded into the background, however, once the first pitch was thrown. Baseball took center stage and the Spirit stole the show, edging Quebec 3-2 to take a one-game lead in the series.

Spirit starter Bryan Morse kept North Shore in the contest with a solid outing on the mound. He pitched seven complete innings allowing just two runs on five hits to earn the victory. Dennis Robinson came in and worked a perfect eighth inning and Kevin Fitzgerald retired the side in order in the ninth for his first postseason save.

The Spirit staked Morse to the early lead with a first inning score courtesy of B.J. Weed. Weed led off the game with a triple to the gap in left center and came around to score the game's first run on a groundout from Vic Davilla.

Quebec evened the score with a run in the top of the fourth. Dany Scalabrini led off with a single and moved to second on a muffed double play opportunity. He advanced to third on a deep fly to right off the bat of Eddie Lantigua and scored on Ed Montague's bloop single.

One inning later, the Capitales grabbed their first lead of the game. With one out and no one on, Alex Garcia reached on an error, moved into scoring position on a Willie James' single and scored the go-ahead run on a base hit from T.J. Shimizu.

Quebec's advantage would be short-lived, however, as North Shore responded with a run of its own in the home half of the inning. Antoin Gray reached on a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Weed and scored on a line-drive single to right from Davilla.

The Spirit offense continued to plug away in the sixth inning, reclaiming the lead with another run. This time it was Andrew Wishy making things happen. Wishy drew a two-out walk to get the Spirit rally started and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Rob Fischer knocked Wishy home with a single up the middle for the game-winning run.

The Spirit and Capitales resume their series tomorrow night at the new Fraser Field. Matt Bishop will take the mound for the Spirit and the Capitales will counter with Keith Dunn. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. and the New England Patriots Cheerleaders will be on hand to take part in the festivities.
