Davilla named player of the Year
September 6, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
Heading into the 2006 season, Spirit star Vic Davilla seemed to be embarking on a new chapter of his baseball career. The all-star slugger had transitioned from player to coach, teaching hitting techniques in lieu of stepping into the box himself. One game into the season, however, Davilla was back on the playing field straddling two worlds as a player-coach.
That balancing act would prove most beneficial for all parties involved. Davilla put together another great season and was rewarded for his efforts today when the eight field managers and media members named him the CanAm League Player of the Year.
Returning to his familiar spot in the Spirit lineup, Davilla finished tied for first in the league with 61 RBIs and was second in on-base percentage at .403. He was also fourth with 12 home runs and 56 runs scored, while finishing fifth with a .474 slugging.
Davilla proved yet again to be a catalyst in the Spirit lineup, helping his team to notch a franchise-high 58 wins. He was instrumental to the success of the team, appearing in all but two games over the course of the season.
"What can you say about a guy who is the heart and soul of the North Shore Spirit?" said owner Nick Lopardo. "Vic Davilla has been the key to our success the past three years and our entire organization is better because of his involvement. He means a lot to me personally. His entire family has given the Spirit a touch of class these past years. I am proud to not only have him wear the spirit uniform but to be able to call he and his family my friends."
Davilla is currently in his 14th year of professional baseball. He was selected in the 26th round of the 1993 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays out of Westchester (NY) Community College. After four years in the Blue Jays organization, he signed with the Adirondack Lumberjacks of the Northeast League. Since 1997, the career .301 hitter has enjoyed tremendous success in the Northeast, Northern and Can-Am Leagues. He has been among the league leaders each season in every statistical hitting category and was the Northeast League MVP in 2003.
