Spirit Suffer 6-3 Loss to Sting

On Friday evening, the Saginaw Spirit were defeated by the Sarnia Sting in the first of a home-and-home weekend match up by the score of 6-3. Scoring for the Spirit were Michael Fine with two goals and Josh Shalla with the other.

The first period was tightly contested with good chances going both ways. The Spirit opened the scoring on the power play 4:05 with a goal by Michael Fine, assists going to Spirit captain Ryan O'Connor and Dalton Young. Top NHL prospect for the upcoming 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Nail Yakupov would answer back for the Sting scoring his 15th goal of the season on the power play at 8:36 of the period. Saginaw would reclaim the lead with another power play goal off the stick of Michael Fine, his second of the night and sixth of the season to put the Spirit up 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

The lone goal of the second period would be Brett Thompson's of Sarnia, scoring late in the period with assists going to Taylor Carnevale and Charlie Sarault, to tie the score at 2-2.

The score would remain tied at two with both teams getting their fair share of chances early in the third period. The turning point of the game came at the 5:33 mark of the period when Saginaw's Garret Ross would be assessed a five minute major and a game misconduct for a check to the head of Sarnia's Nail Yakupov. Sarnia would score two goals on the elongated power play from Reid Boucher and Nail Yakupov to take a 5-3 lead over the Spirit. Brett Thompson would get his second goal of the night moments after the conclusion of the Ross penalty to extend the lead to 6-3. Saginaw's Josh Shalla put in his fifth of the season one minute later as Saginaw would try to claw their way back into the game. However at the 16:08 mark, Brett Thompson would score again for the hat trick, as Sarnia would skate past Saginaw 6-3 on Friday evening.
