Majors Fall 4-3
November 18, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Josh Leivo scored what proved to be the game winning goal at 3:40 of the third period to hand the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors a 4-3 loss in front of 3,800 fans at the Sudbury Community Arena in Ontario Hockey League play on Friday night.
The Majors are now 11-7-1-3 on the season, and although they've lost back to back games, caught a bit of a break on Friday, as the loss didn't drop them in the Eastern Conference standings. The Majors remain at 26 points, but each of the four teams ahead of them in the conference - Ottawa, Brampton, Peterborough, and Belleville - all either lost as well, or were idle.
The Majors and Wolves were tied 3-3 heading into the final 20 minutes, but were dominated by a Wolves' team who concerted a better effort in the third.
"It's always frustrating to lose a game by one goal, especially on the road against a tough opponent," Majors General Manager/Head Coach James Boyd said.
"We battled hard most of the night and did some good things, but when you drop points to conference opponents it's tough.
"It's so competitive in the OHL and so much parity that a loss like this can hurt. Hopefully we bounce back against the Soo on Sunday."
Brett Foy opened the scoring with his third goal of the season at 5:51 of the opening frame from Sergey Kuptsov and Mika Partanen to give the Majors an early 1-0 lead. The Wolves tied it up with an unassisted tally by Mathew Campagna, a shorthanded goal, at 13:48.
Michael Sgarbossa notched his 13th goal of the year at 7:17 of the second period, assisted by Andrey Kuchin and Jeff Sefton, to give the Wolves their first lead of the night before Kristoff Kontos put Sudbury up 3-1 just 3:25 later from Leivo and Josh McFadden at 10:42.
The Majors responded, however, as Jordan Mayer notched his first goal of the night just 11 seconds following Kontos' goal, to once again bring the Majors to within one, assisted by Joseph Cramarossa (playing in his second game back from injury) and Alex Cord at 10:53.
Mayer scored his second of the night on the powerplay from Stuart Percy and Dylan DeMelo to close out the second period scoring at 14:36, notching the game at 3-3.
Shots were almost even through 40 minutes, as the Wolves led 12-11 after 20 minutes, and each team had ten shots on goal during the middle frame.
Final shots were 35-25 in favour of the Wolves after Sudbury dominated the shot clock in the third period by a 14-5 margin.
Spencer Martin got the start for the Majors and made 31 saves in defeat. Joel Vienneau earned the win in goal for the Wolves, stopping 22 of 25 shots he faced.
The Majors close out their weekend road trip when they travel to Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Greyhounds at 7:05 p.m. at the Essar Centre on Sunday evening. They return home on Wednesday, November 23rd when they host their divisional rival the Brampton Battalion at 11 a.m. for a special School Day game. Tickets are still available by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office.
