Spirit Successful in Shootout, Beating Wolves 3-2

(Sudbury, ON) The Saginaw Spirit beat the Sudbury Wolves in a shootout Friday night, coming away with a 3-2 victory. The game marks the second time this season the teams have ended in a shootout, with the Spirit finishing with a win in both. The Spirit earn two points with Friday's win for a total of 29 points, advancing their record to 14-7-0-1.

The Spirit took the lead early in the first period after winger Mitch Fillman opened the scoring on a third-shot rebound, making his first OHL goal at 5:54. Winger Chris Chappell and center Jack Combs were credited with the assists. The Spirit held onto their lead until the second period when the Wolves tied up the score after notching a power play goal at the 11:56 mark. Winger Patrik Lusnak tallied the goal, with assists coming from defensemen Tyler Sheldrake and Brandon Greenside. Lusnak added another power play goal for the Wolves at 7:43 in the second period. The goal was assisted by center Eric O'Dell (NHL ANAHEIM DUCKS) and winger Jared Staal (NHL PHOENIX COYOTES), giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period.

The Spirit came back with a point coming from winger Joe Pleckaitis in the third period, who received a pass from Chappell to knock in a shorthanded goal at 13:13. The goal moved the game into a tie, 2-2.

The Spirit went into a shootout to finish the game. Spirit winger Jordan Skellet notched the first goal for Saginaw, with defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) adding another to cap off a 3-2 win over the Wolves.

Saginaw netminder Edward Pasquale posted 22 saves, while Sudbury goalie Andrew Loverock earned 40 saves.
