Spirit Start Off Weekend With Win - Beat Battalion 5-2

(Brampton, ON) The Saginaw Spirit bested the second top team in the OHL Eastern Conference, the Brampton Battalion, 5-2 Thursday night in Brampton, Ontario. The Spirit handed the Battalion their first regulation loss in the last 19 games, their last regulation loss happening on October 11 against the Sudbury Wolves. Kyle Bochek and Jordan Szwarz each tallied a goal and an assist in the effort, with Tyler Murovich posting thee assists. Goalie Edward Pasquale turned aside 39 of 41 shots. The Spirit earn two points with the win, for a total of 35 points and a record of 17-8-0-1.

The Spirit were the first to get on the scoreboard, with a goal courtesy winger Jordan Szwarz at 14:49 in the first period. Winger Jakub Svoboda and center Kyle Bochek earned the assists on the goal. The first period ended with Saginaw up 1-0.

Brampton responded in the early seconds of the second period, tying the game 1-1. Winger Evgeny Grachev scored the goal :44 seconds in, with center Cody Hodgson posting the assist. Saginaw would regain their lead with two straight goals, the first coming from winger Joe Pleckaitis at the 3:51 mark, assisted by Szwarz and center Tyler Murovich. Winger Chris Chappell would move the score to 3-1 with a goal at 10:15 in the second. Murovich and center Jack Combs earned the assists.

The Spirit saw the Battalion close the scoring gap with a power play goal at 5:34 in the third period, tallied by defenseman Kyle Pereira on a 5-on-3 man advantage. Grachev and Hodgson eached the assists. The Spirit would battle back, first killing off a second 5-on-3 penalty situation then regaining their two goal lead. Winger Mitch Fillman scored the goal at the 9:52 mark, courtesy an assist from Murovich. Bochek sealed the Saginaw win with an empty net goal in the final :10 seconds of the game, by a score of 5-2.

Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale posted 39 saves on 41 shots, with the Battalions Patrick Killeen posting 16 saves on 20 shots.
