
Spirit Jockey for Playoff Positioning Following Sundays Loss to Spitfires

(Windsor, ON) The Saginaw Spirit suffered a 8-2 loss to the league leading Windsor Spitfires Sunday afternoon. The Spirit have a record of 31-23-4-3 and 69 points. As of Sunday afternoon, the Spirit are tied for third place with the Plymouth Whalers (71 points) and the Guelph Storm (71 points). The Whalers are visiting the Erie Otters Sunday for a 4:30 PM match-up.

The Spirit battled the Spitfires through a 2-1 first period that saw Saginaw notch 11 shots on goal to Windsor's 13. Windsor center Adam Henrique opened the games scoring with a power play maker, but Saginaw' Joe Pleckaitis responded moments later with goal to even the contest 1-1. Winger Jordan Skellett and center Tyler Murovich assisted on the goal. The Spitfires would regain their lead before exiting the frame however, courtesy a goal from center Andrei Loktionov.
The second period featured a plethora of scoring from the Windsor squad. Henrique and Loktionov both notched their second goals of the night, and defenseman Harry Young and winger Eric Wellwood also tallied goals. The Spitfires had extending their lead to 6-1 before Saginaw responded. Winger Chris Chappell scored his thirty-sixth of the season on the power play, assisted by winger Jordan Szwarz and center Jack Combs.
Spitfires center Scott Timmins and winger Dale Mitchell both chipped in goals in the third period, securing the 8-2 Windsor victory. Other notable Spitfires contributions in the game included standout sophomore Taylor Hall notching three assists and Mitchell adding two assists to his third period goal for a three point evening.
Spirit netminder Anthony Peters posted 23 saves on 28 shots in the first two periods. Edward Pasquale anchored the net to start the third period, earning 12 saves on 14 shots. Spitfires goalie Andrew Engelage tallied 19 saves on 21 shots. The Spitfires outshot the Spirit 42-21.

The Saginaw Spirit resume action Tuesday morning for the first ever Spirit Education Game, presented by the Dow Chemical Company with support from Dow Corning and the American Chemical Society. The Spirit face off against the Sarnia Sting at the special start time of 11:00 AM. The teams will play in front of several Great Lakes Bay Region Schools while fighting for playoff positioning.
