Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI - On Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit welcomed the Kitchener Rangers to The Dow Event Center for the ninth annual Shocks and Saves game. A late third period goal for the Rangers sunk the Spirit by a score of 2-1 in front of a sellout crowd Saturday night.
A fast paced period found the Saginaw Spirit and Kitchener Rangers neck and neck throughout most of the opening frame. Evan Cormier stood tall to keep the Rangers off the board until the closing moments of the first period. As the Spirit successfully killed their 23rd consecutive penalty, the Rangers were quickly gaining momentum, keeping the Spirit defense on high alert. An untimely penalty for Saginaw gave way to a 1-0 lead for the Rangers, after Adam Mascherin slipped the puck past Cormier at 19:2 4 of the first period. Shots in the first period favored the Kitchener Rangers, 15-11.
A scoreless second period held the Rangers with a one-goal lead over the Saginaw Spirit. Although scoring was scarce, things stayed heated between the Western Conference opponents. At 8:39 of the middle frame, tensions flared as Saginaw's Will Petschenig and Kitchener's Jake Henderson dropped the gloves, sent the Spirit crowd to their feet and skated to the penalty box to serve five minutes for fighting. The Spirit outshot the Rangers in the second period, 15-11.
The Spirit found their scoring legs at 5:09 of the third period, as Blake Clarke snuck the puck past Luke Opilka to tie the game 1-1 on his eighth goal of the season. That score held until 16:10, as Mason Kohn reinstated the Rangers one-goal lead. The Spirit pulled Evan Cormier within the closing moments of the final buzzer in hopes of tying the game yet again. Despite the extra attacker, the Spirit couldn't beat the Rangers defense. Despite the extra attacker, the Spirit were unable to find the back of the net and fell to the Kitchener Rangers by a score of 2-1. Final shots on goal favored Kitchener, 2-1.
