Spirit Buzz by Sting 4-3 in Overtime

Saginaw, MI) - The Saginaw Spirit defeated the Sarnia Sting 4-3 in overtime Friday night at the Dow Event Center. The win moves the Spirit record to 43-21-0-3 and 89 points, good for second place in the OHL West division. Patrick Asselin provided the game-winning goal.

Sarnia notched the only goal of the opening period at the 9:01 mark. Center Jared Gomes was able to fend off a check and score on an individual effort. The Spirit pulled even at 2:08 of the second period. Right-winger Jan Mursak (DET 06) fired a shot to the top corner of the net, off the rush. D-man Andrew Hotham and goaltender Ryan Daniels (OTT 06) picked up the assists. The Spirit took a 2-1 lead at 11:02 of the second period. Left-winger Ryan McDonough deflected center Cody Bass' (OTT 05) point shot into the net. D-man Patrick McNeill (WAS 05) picked up the other assist. The Sting would even up the score at 2-2 with under a minute remaining in the second period. Right-winger Danny Anger whacked the puck into the goal from the top of the crease. D-man Nick Tuzzolino (NYI 05) and left-winger Justin DiBenedetto notched the assists.

The Spirit took a 3-2 lead at 6:09 of the third period. D-man Nigel Williams ripped a point shot into the goal. Left-wingers Tomas Zaborsky (NYR 06) and Asselin picked up the assists. The Sting evened the score at the 16:25 mark of the third period. Center Steven Stamkos was just able to push the puck across the line to tie the game 3-3. Right-winger Tomas Pospisil (ATL 05) and d-man Mark Katic were credited with the assists. Three periods were not enough and this game was settled in overtime.

Saginaw's Patrick Asselin redirected Bass' shot into the net 1:45 into the overtime period to give the Spirit a 4-3 victory. Hotham picked up the other assist on the goal. Spirit netminder Ryan Daniels (OTT 06) stopped 21 shots in the victory; Sting goalie Parker VanBuskirk tallied 50 saves.
