New Jersey Cardinals News Release
The Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) 8-6 at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey to end the Cardinals 4 game winning streak. The loss dropped the Cards to a game under .500 at 17-18, while Lowell improved to 19-16. New Jersey starter Blake Hawksworth (0-2) gave up 8 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits to take the loss and Brian Marshall (3-0) picked up the win for the Spinners out of the bullpen.
The Spinners jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first with only two hits. With two outs, Hawksworth hit right fielder Luis Soto and first baseman Jason Twomley, and left fielder Yahmed Yema reached on an error by second baseman Casey Rowlett. Second baseman Zak Farkes then followed with a double to deep left field that cleared the bases. Lowell added to their lead in the top of the third with three more runs, highlighted by Yemas 2 run triple to centerfield.
The Cardinals got two back in the bottom of the third on RBI groundouts by Rowlett and right fielder Carlos De La Cruz and then rallied for 4 runs in their half of the fifth. With one out, 5 straight New Jersey batters reached base. Rowlett and De La Cruz banged out consecutive singles and shortstop Tyler Green was hit by a pitch to load the bases. First baseman Adam Rodgers singled through the second base hole to plate Rowlett and De La Cruz and chase reliever Chris Jones. Catcher Brandon Yarbrough greeted Marshall with an RBI double to right field to score Greene, before center fielder Yonathan Sivira lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right. But Marshall escaped further damage when he struck out left fielder Sean Dobson to end the Cardsthreat.
Lowell added a run in the ninth, when Farkes, who finished 3-5 with 4 RBIs, scored on Dominic Ramossac fly off reliever Chris Clem. Terry Large earned his second save of the season with a 5 out save, working around a Greene single in the ninth.
The teams will meet for the rubber game of their three game set on Wednesday, July 27. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. The Cards will look to lefty Zack Zuercher (2-3, 5.08), while Lowell counters with their own lefty, Ryan Phillips (3-1, 2.27). The game also marks the third night of the Franklin Sussex Auto Mall and WSUS Field of Dreamscar giveaway, in which one lucky fan will win a brand new Chrysler PT cruiser convertible. There will also a poster giveaway, sponsored by Beautiful Lawn and Gardens and East West Karate.
