Staten Island Yankees News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY --- The Vermont Expos got back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning, but little else as Brett Gardner went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI to lead the Staten Island Yankees to a 6-2 New York-Penn League victory Tuesday night at Richmond County Ballpark at St. George.
Francisco Plasencia and John-Michael Howell smacked back-to-back homers for a 2-0 Expos lead in the top of the first inning. It was the third home run of the season for both players and the second straight day that Howell had hit a solo home run at Staten Island.
It was the first time that Vermont had back-to-back home runs since Josh Whitesell and Kory Casto turned the trick against Aberdeen at Centennial Field on August 21, 2003.
The Yankees got a run back in the bottom of the first as Garnder scored on a Kyle Larsen RBI single and then took the lead 3-2 with two runs in the second innings off Expos pitcher Ricky Shefka, who was making his first start of the season after five relief appearances.
Staten Island then got three insurance runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single from Gardner and an RBI double from Jonathan Poterson for a 6-3 lead.
Shekfa (0-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits over 3.2 innings to take the loss. Reliever John Lannan, whose spot Shefka was starting in, allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings.
Yankee starter David Seccombe surrendered the two solo homers and a double in the first, but settled down to toss four more hitless innings and left after five innings. Reliever Zach Kroenke tossed four innings, allowing three runs and striking out four for his first save of the year.
Poterson was 2-for-4 with his 15th double of the season for the Yankees (22-11), while Vermont's Rolando Arnedo was 1-for-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to an Expos season-high seven games.
After Monday night's 5-4 win gave Vermont a 3-1 record this season in the first game of their four roadtrips this season, the loss on Tuesday dropped the Expos to 1-12 in their other 13 road games.
Vermont (9-26) will wrap up its quick three-game roadtrip to Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 12:35 p.m. The Expos return to Centennial Field on Thursday to begin a six-game homestand with the Lowell Spinners and Mahoning Valley Scrappers through August 2nd.
