Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MA - Going into the top of the ninth, the Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox, were clinging to a slim 2-0 lead.
The Hudson Valley Renegades, affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, however, were posed to play spoiler and they did just that - scoring four runs in the frame, three of them coming on a three-run home run by Greg Jones, handing the Spinners a 4-2 loss at LeLacheur Park on Sunday night.
The Spinners (23-11) got on the board first in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gilberto Jimenez led the inning off with a bunt single down the third base line and Cameron Cannon followed with a single of his own to left field.
After Stephen Scott struck out, Jaxx Groshans singled through the hole at shortstop - scoring Jimenez from second base and giving Lowell the game's first tally over the Renegades (20-15). After Nick Decker reached on catcher's interference - loading the bases.
After Nick Northcut followed with a strikeout, Shay Smiddy was removed in favor of Andrew Gross who pluncked the first batter he faced - Wil Dalton - with a 3-1 slider that nicked his shin, increasing the Spinners lead to 2-0.
Chris Murphy got the start on the mound for Lowell and pitched well. He tossed three shutout innings, allowing one run with five strikeouts and a walk. Yasel Santana followed him with four innings of shutout ball of his own, allowing just one hit himself while striking out four and walking five.
The Spinners are back in action on Monday night when they look to salvage the series with the Renegades and avoid the sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
