State College Spikes News Release

WILLIAMSPORT, PA-The State College Spikes held the Williamsport Crosscutters without a hit until the seventh inning, and used another fast start to power an 8-1 victory at Historic Bowman Field on Thursday night.

In the next-to-last matchup of the 2009 SawBuck Series, State College (37-36) roared out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, scoring a pair of runs in the first frame and three more in the third. Justin Byler and David Rubinstein each contributed two-run doubles to bolster the Spikes' lead.

Rubinstein ended the game 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI, while Brock Holt and Evan Chambers each delivered multi-hit performances as well. The Spikes have now outscored their opponents 20-6 over the first three innings in the last four games.

State College also limited Williamsport (39-34) to just two walks until Leandro Castro cracked the hit column with a one-out double off of Michael Felix (1-2) in the seventh inning. Castro and Darin Ruf combined to put the Crosscutters on the scoreboard with back-to-back hits, but Felix picked up the win after allowing just that lone run in four innings of work. The Spikes left-hander did not walk a batter and struck out two.

With the win, State College took the lead in the 2009 edition of the SawBuck Series, 6-5, and the all-time SawBuck Series lead, 24-23.

Thursday, the Spikes look to stay above .500 as they take on the Crosscutters for the final time in 2009 at Historic Bowman Field. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature left-hander Tyler Cox (8-3) going for State College against Williamsport left-hander Nick Hernandez (7-1).

Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 3WZ at 95.3 FM starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Historic Bowman Field.

The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3-3WZ.
