Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT ---The Vermont Lake Monsters 2009 New York-Penn League home season came to a close with a 4-2 to loss to the Tri-City ValleyCats on Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.

Tri-City got on the board in the fourth inning on a J.P. Martinez two-run homer off of Vermont starter Paul Applebee. It was the seventh home run of the season for Martinez and the 20th homer given up by Vermont pitchers at Centennial Field this season (Lake Monsters hit just seven at Centennial).

The ValleyCats added another run in the fifth on a Barry Butera RBI single for a 3-0 lead before J.P. Ramirez knocked home Vermont's first run with an RBI double scoring Justin Bloxom in the bottom of the inning.

A Jacob Goebbert one-out triple and Nick Stanley RBI single restored a three-run lead for Tri-City in the sixth inning, while Vermont got its final run of the night on a Destin Hood RBI single in the eighth. Vermont had 13 hits on the night, but left 10 runners on base and two players picked off base.

Ramirez was 3-for-5 with his 17th double of the season, the sixth most doubles in a season by a Vermont player. Bloxom, Hood and Sean Nicol each added two hits for the Lake Monsters, while starter Paul Applebee (0-1) allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Evan Bronson pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for Vermont, setting a new Lake Monsters record for lowest ERA by a reliever in home games. Bronson did not give up an earned run in 23 1/3 innings at Centennial this season, allowing just eight hits with two walks and 22 strikeouts in 10 games pitched at home.

Robert Donovan (2-5) gave up one run on seven hits over five innings to pick up the win for Tri-City (25-47), while James MacDonald one scoreless inning for his fifth sacve. Erik Castro and Rene Garcia both had two hits for the ValleyCats.

Vermont (32-40) still has three games remaining in the season as the Lake Monsters head off to New York to face the Staten Island Yankees in a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
