Cutters Start Slow, Can't Recover

September 3, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

Williamsport lost their second straight game to the State College Spikes on Thursday night by the final score of 8-1 giving the Spikes a 6 games to 5 edge in the '09 SawBuck Series.

Just like Wednesday night, the Spikes jumped out to an early lead as they plated two runs in the top of the 1st and three for in the 3rd.

Cutters starter Jonathan Pettibone (2-4, 5.35), in his first start since July 22nd after being sidelined due to shoulder fatigue, allowed four runs (three earned), two hits, and two walks in 2.1 innings.

State College Spikes starting pitcher Brent Klinger (0-0, 0.00) made his Spikes debut after being called up from the GCL-Pirates on Tuesday. He was able to baffle the Cutters line-up, holding them hitless through three innings before being relieved by former Cutter Mike Felix (1-2, 3.60). Felix and Klinger combined on a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings before Williamsport DH Leandro Castro ripped a double to left. 1B Darin Ruf made sure the Spikes would not get a shutout as he plated Castro with a RBI double down the leftfield line.

State College boosted their lead in the top of the 9th when they scored three runs to increase their lead to 8-1.

The Cutters offense managed only four hits on the evening.
