
Spikes Smash 15 Hits, Fall to Thunder, 9-6, on Tuesday

TRENTON, N.J.- The State College Spikes pounded out 15 hits, including four forEthan Mendoza, but the Trenton Thunder had the biggest hits in taking a 9-6 decision on Tuesday night at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
Mendoza, the Spikes' (5-5) 18-year-old middle infielder from Bedford, Texas who is committed to Arizona State, also went 3-for-3 stealing bases on Tuesday as he reached base five times. The Southlake Carroll High School product produced singles in his first two at-bats, was hit by a pitch in his third, then produced a double and an RBI single in his last two times at the plate.
The Spikes trailed 9-2 after six innings, but climbed back in the game starting withElie Kligman's pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh. That was followed in the eighth byCade Climie's RBI double andTyler Wilson's sacrifice fly to draw State College within 9-5.
With two outs in the ninth, Mendoza's fourth hit of the game scored Kligman to put runners on first and second and bring the tying run to the plate. However,Kyle Huckstorfsmoked a line drive straight at Trenton (7-3) right fielderBrendan O'Donnellfor the final out.
Grant Lashurewent 3-for-3 at the plate in his Spikes debut after spending the spring catching at Eastern Illinois before being lifted for Kligman in the seventh.
Cam Buffordproduced a run-scoring single in the third, while Hufckstorf drove in the other State College run with a groundout in the first.
Trenton opened up the game in the fourth onColton Becker's three-run homer just over the wall in the left field as part of a four-run frame.Alden Mathesthen capped off another four-run Thunder burst with a two-run shot inside the right field fould pole in the fifth.
Spikes starterConnery Peterswas tremendous on the mound, recording six strikeouts, including four in a row at one point, over three innings of work. Peters yielded one run on two hits, one walk and a hit batsman.
RelieverDerrick Cherry(0-1) was charged with the loss in his Spikes debut after being tagged for seven runs in an inning-plus.
Thunder relieverJordan Sesar(1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings on the mound.
Wednesday, the Spikes face the Thunder at 7:00 p.m. for the middle game of their three-game series at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. State College leftyTy Fisher(0-0) gets the ball to face Trenton right-handerPeter Gallo(0-0).
